Recent Patch Ticks
This handsome moth was caught during an all-night trapping session on Weston Moor on the night of 29 July 2011. The totals for the night were 124 macros and 85 micros. This Jersey Tiger and a Satin Lutestring were both Patch Ticks.
A week later, on 6 August 2011, another Patch Tick was an Annulet, taken during a soggy night at Walton Common.

Small Ranunculus
Several have been caught in the Weston and Somerset areas recently, but this was the first for our Clevedon / Portishead patch
Small Marbled
This diminutive moth was caught in a Clevedon garden on the night of 11 July 2011, despite the efforts of its captor, who first let it escape and then managed to re-capture it. Only after several hours did he realised what it was, instead of "another micro for Paul to sort out".

Tyntesfield Bioblitz 20 May 2011
The Cafe Birders joined in the Bioblitz at Tyntesfield National Trust on Friday night and ran 7 traps until about 03.00 on Saturday morning. It was rather cold, but, nevertheless, we caught 50 macro species, the highlight of which was a Beautiful Snout. Previous records in the Bristol Region were in 1956, 1958, 1969 and one between 1986 and 1991. What an elegant moth!

Small Eggar Larval Webs
These pictures were taken on 17 May 2011 near Mill Leaze sluice. A walk along the road near Dowlais today revealed at least eight more such webs.

Silver-striped Hawk-moth
Previous records in the Bristol region were in 1925, 1886, 1885, 1884, 1869 and 1852, so there was much excitement when this moth was discovered in a trap on Walton Common at dawn on 6 May 2011. Two stunning patch ticks within a week - will this be a bumper year, or is it all downhill from here?

A Windy Night on Weston Moor, 30 April 2011
An evening's trapping produced 37 Macro species, which was well down on the bumper numbers of the previous weekend at a nearby site in the Gordano Valley. However, it did produce a Glaucous Shears - the first Avon record since 1970:
